President's Overview

Greetings
to the 1,100 households located within the boundaries of the Verdugo Woodlands
West Homeowners Association!! Each
year, prior to our annual meeting held at the Catalina Verdugo Adobe, all 1,100
homes receive a copy of our quarterly newsletter, despite the fact that many of
those property owners have not as yet joined their homeowners association. This is our way of introducing ourselves to
new homeowners and reminding those who may have vacillated about becoming
members, to join us and your neighbors for a better neighborhood.
Our
Association has been a strong voice with the City Council in establishing new
Design Review standards and changing the makeup of the Design Review Boards in
an effort to preserve the character of the Woodlands in particular and our
neighborhoods in general.
We
are all busy with the demands of everyday life and attending to our families;
there is simply not enough time to keep up with the goings on in our city
government. That’s where I hope we can
help.
For
example, City Council elections were held in April, 2009 and our Homeowners’
Association sponsored a Council Candidate’s forum here, in the Woodlands. That
allowed the attendees to meet and hear what each candidate had to say and then be
able to cast an informed vote.
We
also attend or file a written statement on every project in the Woodlands that
is subject to Design Review.
Pot
holes seem to appear overnight and many times you simply may not have the time
to report it to the City --- simply e-mail or call us and we will report it for
you. Of course, we are also watchful for those menaces.
In
another example, Our Association has worked with the City in an ongoing effort to
get the lamp posts in the Woodlands repaired and repainted. It takes time to
convince the appropriate department that the need is there. Then bids have to be
secured and finally, the matter goes before the City Council for approval.
Our
membership application asks for your e-mail address if you have one. Please know that we do not share that
information with anyone – ever. We use
the e-mail addresses to: alert our members of construction projects in their
neighborhood, or when there are problems in the Woodlands, such as the spate of
burglaries we experienced in July. Our
Association worked with Community Police Officer Matt Zakarian and our
membership to see that as many residents as possible were alerted. We also send e-mails to remind you to display
the American flag on appropriate holidays and to remind you to vote.
Officer
Sue Shine has recently replaced Officer Matt Zakarian as our Community Police
Officer
